BIG Anti-Bullying Win For Stockport Academy

Stockport Academy has once again been recognised nationally for its anti-bullying work.

The academy, which hosts its Year 6 Open Evening on 20th September, has been awarded the BIG Award for Excellence in Challenging Bullying – the third time it has achieved the award in three years.

As the only school in Stockport to receive the honour, the academy’s Anti-Bullying Ambassadors also won the national ‘Student Team of the Year’ title at United Learning’s Best In Everyone Awards earlier this year.

This follows a number of anti-bullying initiatives led by the ambassadors throughout the last school year, including a multi-coloured balloon release in celebration of anti-homophobia week.

In addition to these activities, the Anti-Bullying Ambassadors also work closely with new students, helping them to settle into life at the academy. As well as providing support to those who might have worries or concerns.

Mrs McCann, Stockport Academy Principal, said: “Our anti-bullying stance is part of an ethos that runs throughout Stockport Academy. It is a tremendous honour to once again receive the BIG Award, which is thanks to the hard work of all of our students, staff and families who genuinely care for one another and are determined to make sure that bullying of any form is effectively stamped out at the earliest opportunity.”

Val McFarlane, Director of the Bullying Intervention Group, said: “Stockport Academy takes bullying very seriously and wants all of its students to learn in a safe and happy environment.  The academy has a range of anti-bullying strategies in place and involves the whole school community in everything it does.  It's anti-bullying policy is up to date and well written and the academy has a great peer support scheme, as well as robust recording and monitoring systems.  The school also regularly raises awareness about bullying, helping to ensure all students feel confident that the school cares about their welfare.  I am delighted to award Stockport Academy the BIG Award for Excellence in Challenging Bullying.”
