Public Speaking Club students lay down the law
Students from Stockport Academy learned first-hand about how the law and justice system works during a visit to Manchester Crown Court.
The academy’s Public Speaking Club took part in a courtroom workshop that involved them roleplaying a case, as part of a session delivered by the National Centre for Citizenship and the Law (NCCL).
After hearing about how the court operates and what it takes to get a job in the legal sector, the group played out a scenario involving a defendant who had been arrested on drugs charges. Students wore full legal costume and were given a basic script to show them how the trial would play out.
Mr McCarron said: “This was a really unique and engaging activity for our students to get involved in, allowing them to gain a greater understanding of the law and justice system. It was a great opportunity to practice their public speaking and debating skills, so thank you to NCCL for inviting us to take part.”
Year 8 student Oscar Scully said: “I played the role of the judge and it was really interesting to see how a courtroom worked. We all now know what it takes to begin a career in law, which is great for those of us who might think about this in the future.”
