Stockport Academy Aims High For Anti-Homophobia Week

Students and staff at Stockport Academy celebrated Anti-Homophobia Week in the most uplifting of ways.

Over 350 balloons representing the multi-coloured pride flag were released by students on Friday in celebration of the life of its creator Gilbert Baker, who sadly passed away earlier in the year. Check out this magnificent spectacle in the video below.

Throughout the week, our Peer Mentors arranged a wide range of activities to raise awareness of anti-homophobia, from special assemblies to bake sales and dance performances in the atrium.

At the end of the week, students were encouraged to come to school in colourful non-uniform to help raise money for charity.

Year 10 Pastoral Manager Mr Cheetham, who helped organise the week, said: “Our Peer Mentors have worked exceptionally hard to ensure Anti-Homophobia Week was a success and their dedication has certainly paid off.

“It is great to see so many students getting engaged on this important issue and it sends out an important message.”
