Stockport Academy SMSC Day Has It All

Our final SMSC Day of the year offered students the chance to try a range of new activities while also raising awareness of some really important issues.

The whole school spent the day off the usual timetable of lessons as a raft of special visitors were welcomed through the doors to lead sessions on issues that covered everything from health and wellbeing to exam stress.

One of the highlights was a talk in the Main Hall from former gang member Gavin McKenna, who turned his life around to become a born again Christian. Gavin talked to students about his past life experiences to educate students on the dangers of gang life and how to avoid getting caught up in being involved with them.

Meanwhile, SMSC Day for Year 9 focused on active lifestyles, with students having a go at alternative sports such as archery and caving – the latter of which involved a unique ‘Cavebus’; a converted school bus that simulates the experience of cave exploration.

SMSC Coordinator Mrs Nicholls said: “Today’s event offered students the opportunity for some real firsts today and I’m pleased to say our SMSC Day was once again a great success. Thank you to all the agencies, individuals and members of staff who have supported the event and plans are already underway for our next event in the new school year.”
