Stockport Academy Student Council make their mark

Members of our Student Council spent the afternoon at Stockport Town Hall as part of a borough-wide event to encourage young people to get involved in local politics.

The Young Reps session saw council representatives from a number of schools meet to take part in fun and informative workshops that covered a range of important issues from mental health and public transport to facilities for young people to use outside of school.

There was also the opportunity to speak to council leaders about ideas on how they could make Stockport a better place to grow up in.

Students recently participated in Stockport Council’s ‘Make Your Mark’ campaign, which encouraged them to vote on what are the issues in today’s society they feel need the most attention.

Mental Health was one of the most popular answers – and all this week students have been having assemblies focusing on the matter, while there have been drop-in sessions every lunchtime in the Faith Room.

Mrs Nicholls, who leads the Student Council, said: “This was an excellent opportunity for our students and they really made the most of it. They were engaged, asked lots of questions and were a credit both to themselves and to Stockport Academy.”
