Stockport Academy balloon release marks National Anti-Homophobia Day

Our peer mentors released 50 balloons this morning to mark National Anti-Homophobia Day.

Displaying the colours of the rainbow to represent the LGBT community, each balloon has a piece of card inside displaying an anti-homophobia message. The idea is that when people find our balloons, they can let us know how far the balloon travelled via our Twitter page (@sptacademy).

Events are being held in school all week to celebrate Anti-Homophobia Week, with cake sales, dance shows and form tasks taking place alongside a non-uniform day on Thursday to raise money for charity.

Peer mentors are running assemblies all week to raise awareness of anti-homophobia, while the group have been meticulously planning for a spectacular ‘colour bash’ on Thursday which will see students donate £2 each for the chance to take part in a paint fight on the MUGA. This event has been kindly sponsored by several local branches of the Co-op and there’ll be a full report online later in the week.

Mrs Nicholls, who leads the peer mentors, said: “This year’s Anti-Homophobia Week is our most ambitious yet and the atmosphere around the school is electric at the moment in anticipation of Thursday’s colour bash.

“Of course there’s a really serious message at the heart of everything that’s been organised by our peer mentors this week and I’m so proud of them for taking such a strong stance against homophobia and all forms of discrimination.”
