Stockport Academy celebrates SMSC Day

Our termly SMSC (Social, Moral, Spiritual, Cultural) Day took place just before the start of the Easter holidays.

Following an assembly delivered by Greater Manchester Police, students spent the day in specially-organised classes on an array of subjects from healthy relationships and sexting to anti-homophobia and domestic abuse.

One of the highlights of the day was a session led by former Emmerdale actor Shaun Dellenty who spoke to Year 10 students about LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) inclusion. He later tweeted: “Feeling very inspired by the amazing Year 10 students I worked with … A privilege to meet them.”

In the afternoon Year 9 students heard from Jawad Mahboob who told them what it was like growing up as a gay Muslim. His emotive story struck a chord with both students and staff, who described the assembly as both ‘humbling’ and ‘eye-opening’.

SMSC Co-ordinator Mrs Fox said: “Yet again our SMSC Day brought a wide range of important issues to the forefront of our students’ minds and they tackled them exceptionally well.

“I would like to thank all of the agencies and individuals who gave up their time today to visit us and help make the day such a success.”
