Stockport Academy students hit the high notes with opera workshop

Words and music took over Stockport Academy, with the visit of the English Pocket Opera Company (EPOC).

The academy hosted a performance by EPOC as part of an exciting national tour which has just been launched with United Learning – the group to which the school belongs.

Academy students were treated to a performance of ‘Opera Blocks’; an engaging show designed to break down the building blocks of opera. The interactive session saw Year 7 students performing a cut-down version of ‘Carmen’, before they came up with and delivered their own production.

Those students taking part were also introduced to the three basic ingredients of opera – action, words and music – and were taught the more technical side of the music, for example the use of libretto, arias and choruses.

Stockport Academy Executive Principal Mr McCarron said: “To see our Year 7 students confidently performing opera in front of their peers really is something special – not to mention a bit different!

"EPOC put on a fantastic show that really engaged both staff and students and broadened everyone’s horizons and we would like to thank them for treating us to a wonderful morning at the opera.”
