Stockport Academy receives Discovering Democracy Award

Stockport Academy has been recognised for the work it does in engaging its students on social and political issues with a prestigious national award.

The Discovering Democracy Award, which is supported by HM Government, celebrates the success of schools that go above and beyond in equipping students with the knowledge and ability to be socially and politically active.

As both parents and students at the school know this is something we pride ourselves on. As well as having our own school council – which is heavily involved in shaping the development of the academy and its policies – students continually demonstrate social awareness through regular charity work and the organising of events to support local community groups.

However, this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to opportunities in this area at Stockport Academy. For example:

Our SMSC Days

Student Leadership Roles

Student Voice

Visits and assemblies with our local MP and councillors

Regular charity events organised by our students

Our Annual Poppy Drop

Principal Mr McCarron said: “Being honoured with the Discovering Democracy Award is a real commendation to both staff and students at Stockport Academy and we are extremely proud to be recognised on a national level.”
