Stockport Academy students are top of the Pop Maths

A group of Stockport Academy maths students spent their Saturday at Manchester Metropolitan University taking part in the Pop Maths Quiz.

The Year 7s and 8s gave up half of their weekend to pit their wits against eight other schools from across the region – and were the first group ever to represent our school in the contest.

After tackling the tricky questions, which were maths puzzles based around everyday situations, the students attended a lecture on how maths is used in the real world.

As ever, the group behaved impeccably and even prompted MMU Principal Mathematics Lecturer Dr Jon Shiach to single them out for praise.

“It was a joy to have so many enthusiastic and polite students from Stockport Academy and you made a valuable contribution to the event,” he said. “Your students conducted themselves well and are a credit to the school.”

Numeracy Coordinator Ms Brown, who arranged the visit, said: “We had such a good day and I couldn’t be prouder of our students.

“They were the youngest group there but that didn’t put them off one bit – they didn’t stop asking questions and their thirst for knowledge was truly inspiring – well done to everyone who came along.”
