Stockport Academy students take on Junior Maths Challenge

Students in Years 7 and 8 put their maths skills to the test today as they sat the national Junior UK Maths Challenge (JMC).

The annual contest involves participants answering multiple choice questions without the use of a calculator, with the top performers across the country receiving certificates of various levels for their efforts.

This year we were also joined by entrants from Alexandra Park Primary School, with four Year 6 students and a brave Year 5 student also pitting their wits against the paper, which they had one hour to complete.

After the challenge was over, our guests from Alexandra Park mingled with our Year 7s, enjoying a celebratory lunch in the Faith Room where they could finally breathe a sigh of relief!

In February a number of our older students celebrated after achieving well in the Intermediate UK Maths Challenge, with one Year 9 student even qualifying for a follow-on round known as they ‘Grey Kangaroo’, which he sat in March.

Numeracy Coordinator Ms Brown said: “The JMC is a prestigious Maths competition and we are lucky to have so many talented students taking part once again. I am so proud of everyone who had a go today and am confident we will be seeing many smiling faces once the results come through later in the year!”

Those who receive a certificate as part of today’s challenge will also be invited to attend Stockport Academy’s Prize Giving Ceremony, which will be taking place on 7th July at Stockport Plaza.
