Student Council hosts Mayor at Stockport Academy

Our Student Council had the chance to talk politics with the Mayor of Stockport during a recent visit to the academy.

Councillor Chris Gordon met with the group and told them about his experiences in local government before answering questions from around the room.

The Mayor received a grilling on a range of topics from what are his plans for Stockport over the next year to what is his favourite goth metal band – and at the end of the session he told us he was highly impressed not only with the curiosity of the council but also their “impeccable” behaviour.

Other topics included our Discovering Democracy Award and potential pathways for a career in politics.

Students put on a short presentation to welcome Cllr Gordon to Stockport Academy and the meeting ended with an informal lunch for everyone who attended.

Mr John, who leads the Student Council, said: “The group really enjoyed meeting the Mayor and I would like to thank him once more for taking the time out of his busy schedule to visit Stockport Academy.

“Our council members were really engaged in what Cllr Gordon had to say and definitely made the most of the opportunity to learn first-hand what it takes to succeed in political and leadership roles.”

In the last 12 months the Student Council have also met with Stockport MP Ann Coffey and Cllr Kevin Hogg, who was a previous Mayor of the borough.
