Stockport Academy students play rugby with Prince Harry

A group of Stockport Academy students rubbed shoulders with royalty after starring in a rugby training session with Prince Harry and the England Under-20 Squad.

The event – of which Stockport Academy was the only school to be involved – was organised by local charity Street Games, which aims to benefit young people’s lives through sport.

While there had only been rumours that the Prince might be attending earlier in the day, his presence was confirmed to the group minutes before they stepped onto the MUGA at Alexandra Park in Edgeley.

After being treated to a skills demo by Freestyling World Champion Andrew Henderson, the students were coached by the professionals before taking part in a light-hearted game of touch rugby with the young royal.

As you might imagine, the world’s media was there taking photographs and filming footage that has already been seen by millions of people – you can hear some of our media coverage by clicking here.

Year 10 student Destiny Wong told the Daily Mail: “Prince Harry is a really genuine and down to earth guy. We were taught some tricks. He said ‘you can do it. If I can do it, you can’.”

Meanwhile, Saif Yaseen in Year 9 said: “He was really nice and sociable. We talked about the school and the community and if we played sport in and out of school.”

Head of PE Mr Sumner said: “What happened here was a once in a lifetime opportunity for our students and is personally one of the highlights of my career.

“What makes me so proud is the way our students conducted themselves. It’s not every day you get to meet royalty and the confidence and good behaviour every single one of them displayed was absolutely exemplary.

“Thank you so much to Life Leisure and Street Games for letting us be a part of a day that none of us will ever forget!”

Do you have any photos of Prince Harry’s visit? If so we’d love to share them on our website! Email us any snaps you’d like to show off.
