Stockport Academy students set for Snowdon trek

A group of intrepid students at Stockport Academy are preparing to scale one of the UK’s highest mountains as part of a fundraising venture.

The 50 strong group of Year 11s make the journey on Saturday 1st October, with the aim of raising £1,600 to help build much-needed classrooms for a school in Sri Lanka.

Habberana School is run by a local priest who works 15 hours a day, not only as Headteacher but also as a teacher of English, cook and cleaner, all to help keep the school running, with over 300 children crammed into three or four undersized rooms for most lessons.

To help their fellow students in Sri Lanka, the Stockport Academy team are set to make the trek up Snowdon taking the Pyg track, involving around 800 meters of ascent over 5.5 kilometres.

The group have been supported by the Cheadle Heath branch of outdoor retailer Go Outdoors, who have offered them advice ahead of their trip, as well as money off any equipment they might need.

Commenting on the venture, Frank McCarron, Executive Principal of Stockport Academy, said:

“Our students have always strived to help those less fortunate than themselves and I couldn’t be prouder of their efforts in organising this sponsored walk.

“Not only does it promise to be an experience they will remember for the rest of their lives, but they are also contributing towards what is an incredibly worthy cause. Thank you also to Go Outdoors for their support in helping to get them ready for this exciting challenge.”
