Stockport Academy students conquer Mount Snowdon

A group of intrepid students at Stockport Academy scaled Wales’ highest peak at the weekend, raising over £1,300 in the process.

The 50 strong group of Year 11s made the journey on Saturday 1st October, with the aim of raising funds to help build much-needed classrooms for Habarana School in Sri Lanka.

The school is run by a local priest who works 15 hours a day, not only as Headteacher, but also as a teacher of English, cook and cleaner, all to help keep the school running, with over 300 children crammed into three or four undersized rooms for most lessons.

Determined to help out were the young adventurers from Stockport Academy, who spent seven hours trekking up and down Mount Snowdon in cold, wet and foggy conditions.

The group are also still campaigning, as they make a final push to reach their £1,600 fundraising target, with a pledge from Executive Principal Frank McCarron to personally match the final amount of donations with his own money.

Commenting on the venture, Mr McCarron said: “I have been blown away by this amazing group of students and what they have achieved in what were really tough conditions. They will no doubt remember this experience for the rest of their lives and I couldn’t be prouder of the motivation, passion and dedication they have demonstrated in raising money to benefit others.

"Thank you also to Go Outdoors for their support in helping to get them ready for this exciting challenge.”

You can still show your support for the students by making a donation at their Just Giving page.
