Stockport Academy students learn the ropes of radio

Some of our students took their first steps towards becoming radio stars of the future following a visit to a local radio station.

The group of nine – all members of the Student Council – spent over an hour at PIE Radio at Hallam Mill in Stockport learning the basic rules of being a presenter and how a music playout system works.

They carried out tasks including uploading music to a database and recording a radio ‘ident’, before taking part in a quiz on PIE Radio and everything they’d done during the session.

The visit was part of a series of workshops the Student Council will be doing with the organisation over the coming weeks as part of its Rising Stars project, which aims to encourage young people to get involved in the radio industry and learn how to present a radio show.

Mrs Nicholls, who leads the Student Council, said: “We’d like to thank Solomon from PIE Radio for inviting us to take part in this exciting project and we can’t wait for the next session.

“All the students could talk about on the way home was being on the radio – their enthusiasm and good behaviour throughout was a real credit to both themselves and the school.”
