Stockport Academy celebrates ethnic diversity on SMSC Day

Stockport Academy students had the opportunity to learn first-hand about other cultures as part of this term’s SMSC Day.

Years 7-10 were taken off timetable for the day to participate in a range of one-off sessions such as Chinese Calligraphy, Japanese Origami, Indian Stick Dancing and Pakistani Henna.

Students in Year 8 spent the day in crime awareness workshops, as they were visited by the Prison Me No Way organisation who demonstrated how making bad life choices can lead to time in a prison cell. They even brought a mobile prison cell with them to show how uncomfortable it is!

Other classes included studying art inspired by the experiences of victims of the Holocaust, seminars on railway safety and other important issues such as mental health, e-safety and LGBT.

Mrs Nicholls, who organised SMSC Day, said: “Our SMSC Days are so important in helping to broaden the horizons of our students and everyone’s had a really great day. The feedback from the agencies who have visited us has been amazing – praising both the behaviour and engagement of everyone who has taken part in what’s been going on.

“I’d like to thank all the organisations who have taken the time to help us make today a success and can’t wait to do it again at our next event in March!”
