Stockport Academy students and staff pay respects at annual Poppy Drop

Students, staff and guests of Stockport Academy impeccably observed our annual Poppy Drop on Armistice Day.

Just before 11am, students lined up in the atrium before Year 11 students Nancy Kirby and Beth Kirby performed readings that ended with the poem ‘In Flanders Fields’. Sixth Form student Shaun Brady then signalled the start of two minutes silence by playing the last post on his saxophone.

At the end of the period of reflection, Year 10 and 11 students dropped poppies bearing messages of thanks to those who have lost their lives serving the country during armed conflicts as guests from Socially Yours community group, Edgeley and Cheadle Heath councillor Richard Coaton, Stockport MP Ann Coffey followed suit. Students who are members of local cadet groups accompanied them, dressed in full uniform.

The school was then addressed by Minister of St Cuthbert’s Mike Newman who closed proceedings.

Executive Principal Mr McCarron said: “Our Poppy Drop is always a truly humbling experience and this year’s was no exception. I would like to thank all guests who paid their tributes alongside our school community for attending and it is an honour to share this important time with others outside of Stockport Academy.

“I am so proud of the way our students conducted themselves throughout the Poppy Drop – respect is an important part of the values that drive our school and this is clearly evident by the way they handled themselves throughout the morning.”
