Student Council leave lasting impression on Shadow Secretary

We welcomed Shadow Secretary of State for Education Angela Rayner MP through our doors last week (13th January).

The politician met with our Student Council who had the opportunity to hear about how she became an MP and ask her questions.

Grilling her on everything from Progress 8 to who were her biggest inspirations when she was younger, the council then explained some of the work they’ve been doing within school as part of their role as representatives of the student body. This included their recent visit to Stockport Town Hall and the work they have been doing to raise awareness and support of mental health among young people.

Angela then went on a tour around the Academy with Mr McCarron, visiting several classrooms and learning about day-to-day life here.

Mr McCarron said: “It was an honour to welcome such an esteemed guest to Stockport Academy and we can’t thank her enough for a really inspiration session with our Student Council.

Angela said: “The Student Council were great, they asked me some challenging questions and were a really clever, really engaged confident bunch. Hopefully they came away from our meeting thinking ‘you know what, I can do whatever I want to do’.”
