Our Department
The Science Department consists of 9 members of staff which includes two technicians. The department is an effective team within the Academy where the professional development of each individual is encouraged and valued.
The Science faculty offers a full range of courses allowing students of all abilities to access the curriculum and we have a thriving STEM Club in Key Stage 3.
Key Stage 3
Our aim is to deliver a curriculum which students enjoy; it should be both rewarding and worthwhile and improve their learning skills.
Key Stage 3 students in years 7, 8 and 9 follow the exploring science course. It is designed to develop students' scientific skills and to increase their understanding of "How Science Works" (a strand of the new curriculum). A greater emphasis has been placed on science in the news to allow better preparation for Key Stage 4.
Key Stage 4
Our aim is to provide a curriculum more suited and relevant for all our students. We offer traditional Double Award Science and for the past four years we have successfully delivered separate sciences in Biology, Chemistry and Physics to an ever increasing number of students. Students can also opt to take our new BTEC in Applied Science. It is 100% coursework based and students are awarded the equivalent of two GCSE grades.
Key Stage 5
A large proportion of students at Stockport Academy take an AS/A2 level in a Science related course. Our Key Stage 5 courses currently taught are;
AS and A2 Biology (OCR)
AS and A2 Chemistry (OCR)
AS and A2 Physics (AQA)
We have a fabulous group of Student Ambassadors in our sixth form who support and promote the work of the department by visiting local primary schools along with our teachers.
Some of our Sixth Form students also act as peer mentors to younger students in school to provide further support with their science work.
