Key Stage 4

Gateway Science:

This course will be taken by some students in Year 10 as a single GCSE, followed with an Additional science GCSE taken in Year 11.

Some students will take this course as a single GCSE over two years.

Gateway Science is about the importance of science for society and covers important areas of Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Students who wish to continue their science education post 16 should take Gateway Science followed by either Additional Science or Biology in Year 11.

Additional Science:

This course will be taken in Year 11 by students who have already completed the Gateway Science course. It provides a suitable foundation for students who wish to take further science post 16 as it covers all important areas of Physics, Chemistry and Biology. It will lead to a double science qualification, together with Gateway Science (one grade in Y10 and one in Y11) for employment requiring general science qualifications.

BTEC in Applied Science:

Scientists work in industry, the health service, government establishments, research and educational institutions.

The qualification is 100 per cent internally assessed. Teaching strategies reflect the nature of the work within science-based industries, using a series of assignments and activities encouraging you to take responsibility and ownership for your learning.

Students will be allocated to whichever science course they are most suited to dependent on their SATs results and previous performance. If you are concerned about which science group you will be in please discuss this with your science teacher.

Advanced Science:

For those students with a strong aptitude for Science we are offering an Advanced Science course, which has to be selected as an option. If you take this option you will take 3 separate sciences GCSE's in Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
