Literacy
The development of literacy skills is very important to us here at Stockport Academy. The ability to communicate effectively is crucial to every area of life.
We have a dedicated team of teachers in the English Faculty who make sure that learning to read and write is high on the agenda of all the planning and preparation we do.
But more than that, literacy skills are taught across the curriculum, in all subjects, so that all students are continually learning new vocabulary and developing new reading and writing skills.
We have a Director of Literacy who provides additional literacy classes for students who need to spend more time on their reading and literacy skills.
Members of staff also provide individual reading and spelling lessons to support students who have additional barriers to learning. Our aim is that everyone at Stockport Academy has the reading and writing ability to access the secondary curriculum.
There is also a 'Buddy Reading' partnership at our school, where older students work with younger ones to improve reading skills. We plan to develop links with local primary schools, so that our students can improve their reading skills and encourage younger readers.
We are developing reading activities as part of form time and enrichment, and students have the opportunity to read in the Learning Resource Centre before school and at lunch time.
Learning to read is arguably the most important skill we can give our students, and we look forward to working in partnership with parents and carers to ensure that our students achieve their full potential.
