On Your Marks, Get Set, Go! - Stockport Academy Joins the Get Set Network
The Humanities Department at Stockport Academy has been officially recognised for their commitment to the Olympic and Paralympic Values.
The year 13 Citizenship students have undertaken a number of projects which fed into the values of active citizenship which London 2012 is trying to promote. As well as studying the games, students have tackled some of the more controversial issues surrounding London 2012, also tracking the development and preparation. The department was also recognised for the exciting projects it is planning for the summer term. All the humanities subject areas will take on an issue relating to London 2012 and really help the students to get enthused about this once in a lifetime experience. Stockport Academy has clearly demonstrated that London 2012's education programme extends far beyond PE and sport.
The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) is to award Stockport Academy a plaque and certificate to acknowledge our involvement in the London 2012 education programme. We are now a part of an active London 2012 community of schools and colleges across the UK - the Get Set network - and will receive access to exclusive competitions and 2012 Games related opportunities over the coming months.
Being a part of the network means that Stockport Academy has earned the right to use the London 2012 education logo on our headed paper, website and school sign, and receive tickets for the Games through the London 2012 Ticketshare initiative as well as being able to organise other exciting events which we hope our students will benefit from.
Sebastian Coe, chairman of LOCOG, said: ‘When London won the right to host the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, we made a clear promise to use the power of the 2012 Games to inspire young people. I am proud to welcome Stockport Academy in to the Get Set network for their exciting work around the Olympic Values of friendship, excellence and respect and the Paralympic Values of inspiration, courage, determination and equality.'
