Primary Maths Masters Compete For Tournament Title

Primary school students put their maths skills to the test as they competed to become champions of Stockport Academy’s first ever Primary Maths Tournament.

Year 5 students from Cheadle Heath, Lark Hill and Alexandra Park Primary Schools took part, with four children per team doing their best across several rounds to bring home the trophy.

Competitors had to work together in the first round, which saw them attempt to solve a number of mathematically-based problems. They then each represented their school as an individual, having a go at some tricky UKMT Maths Challenge questions and a code-breaking round, where they had to follow some mathematical clues to unlock a numbered padlock on a treasure chest to release some prizes inside.

The final round involved them competing on TT Rockstars, attempting to solve as many times tables as possible in a minute.

After totting up the scores, Lark Hill Primary School’s team was declared the winner, taking home the trophy. All those involved received certificates for some excellent work.

Stockport Academy Head of Maths Mrs Mackintosh said: “We really enjoyed hosting these talented mathematicians and can’t wait to teach them as Stockport Academy students when they reach Year 7!

“Everyone had a great day and plans are already in place for next year’s tournament!”
