SMSC Day a success as students broaden their horizons
Stockport Academy opened its doors to a wide range of visitors as part of our termly SMSC Day.
SMSC stands for Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural – and students spent the day off their usual timetables in specially-designed sessions to broaden their horizons in these areas.
From learning live-saving First Aid with St John Ambulance to studying Chinese calligraphy and culture, the programme was indeed a varied one and involved a large number of external agencies coming into the academy to deliver workshops.
One of the highlights was with the charity Retrak, with a representative coming in to teach students about the vital work they do. Year 7 students were even involved in a press photocall to support Retrak with an upcoming media awareness campaign – so keep your eyes peeled for that one in the local newspapers!
Elsewhere, Year 10s were given the chance to brush up on their job-seeking skills, with workshops in CV writing and career choices, while other topics included relationships, rail safety, ethnic diversity and LGBT awareness.
SMSC Coordinator Mrs Nicholls said: “On behalf of the academy I would like to thank all agencies, charities and guest speakers for supporting our SMSC Day today. The feedback we have received from students has been great and they have really enjoyed learning about a range of new topics.”
