Stockport Academy left buzzing after Spelling Bee

Stockport Academy students had their literacy skills put to the test at our Spelling Bee this afternoon.

In front of a sell-out crowd in the Main Hall that raised plenty of money for charity, the competition was split into two categories with Years 7 and 8 in the lower age group and Years 9 and 10 in the upper classification.

A total of 24 boys and girls competed against each other, with each form represented by a single student. Competitors were eliminated whenever they spelled out a word incorrectly, leaving two students in each category to battle it out in a penalty shootout-style knockout.

Eventually, Bobby Moore (8PMA) won the 7-8 category, while Dean Sheridan (9CST) claimed the title for the 9-10s. Bobby was victorious with his correct spelling of ‘Flamboyant’, while Dean hit the nail on the head with his spelling of ‘Grotesque’. Both boys were awarded with a £20 Amazon voucher.

Literacy coordinator Ms Brown said: “There has been a lot of excitement around the school in the lead-up to the Spelling Bee and it is great to see so many students passionate about literacy!

“Well done to both Bobby and Dean, along with the valiant efforts of all the other competitors who were brave enough to take part – the standard of competition this year was exceptionally high.”
