Students Brush Up On Their Art Skills During Residential Visit
Our Year 11 Art students spent a weekend working away with professional artists to create some masterpieces for the GCSE coursework.
The group travelled to Conway in North Wales to draw upon the experience of a number of specialised workshops all based around the theme of bestiary – a medieval compendium of beasts.
Working alongside different schools, our students split into smaller groups before being paired up with an artist for the weekend, who then shared their own techniques to create an interpretation of the theme.
Students spent two full days – including a 12-hour stint on Saturday – working on their pieces, which ranged from mandrakes made from modrock and Medieval bees created using wire sculpturing to Medieval paintings layered with paper relief, traditional scrolls with embossed metal, and fashion-themed artwork inspired by images of dragons.
In between their work, the groups enjoyed entertainment in the form of a disco, bingo and campfire songs.
On the final day, everybody exhibited their work to show off what they had created over the weekend.
Head of Art and Design Technology Ms Stirling said: “I have been so impressed with everyone who came to Conway, and the artwork they have created is the best we have seen.
“The students themselves demonstrated resilience, determination and a positive attitude throughout the weekend and this shines through with the excellent standard of coursework they have produced.”
