Year 11 English Trip Brings Poetry To Life

Stockport Academy’s Year 11s spent the day at a special event to learn directly from the poets whose work they are currently studying in their GCSEs.

The day involved a series of lectures, with speakers reading their own poems to a captivated audience, explaining how they wrote them and what inspired them. They also offered exam tips and advice on how to become a professional writer.

Stockport Academy Head of English Mrs Upton said: “We had such a great day and our students were a credit to themselves and the school throughout.

“It was a real once in a lifetime opportunity - just to be in the same room as the Poet Laureate and all of the poets that we heard from, offered our students an incredible insight into what inspired them to write their poems. Context is often the hardest part of students’ poetry studies so it was a truly invaluable experience.

“One of my favourite parts of the day had to be when our students met John Agard on the way out of the event. He wished them luck, let them take some photos and it was a lovely personal moment – something that will stick with them for the rest of their lives.”
