Charity Scores A Winner As Stockport Academy Take On Celebrities

Stockport Academy helped to raise thousands of pounds for charity by organising a charity football match against a team of celebrities.

After weeks of training, the SA staff team kicked off against the Once Upon A Smile Celebrity XI to raise vital funds for the charity. Students and staff worked tirelessly to fundraise through ticket sales, programme sales, a raffle and a non-uniform day. Despite the celebrities beating Stockport Academy 7-2 on the night, charity was the overall winner, and the amount donated to-date stands at £2,850.

Hosted by Cheadle Town FC, the match kicked off in front of a bumper crowd and an electric atmosphere, with Mr McCarron leading out the Staff team and Emmerdale actor Danny Miller captaining the Celebrity XI.

Speaking after the match, Danny said: “The support that Stockport Academy has made to Once Upon A Smile is absolutely crucial. Everyone here tonight has been amazing and I couldn’t believe how many people turned out to cheer on both sides – we don’t usually get this many students coming along and that was great to see.”

Danny was joined by celebrity friends Adam Thomas, Jake Quickenden and Cel Spellman, among other stars.

The evening was organised by Pastoral Managers Mrs McCann and Mr Cheetham, while the Stockport Academy Sports Leaders volunteered as Ball Boys and Girls.

Stockport Academy’s goals were scored by Mr McCarron and Mr Campbell, with both goals drawing huge cheers from the crowd.

Mr Cheetham said: “We had an amazing night and raised a tremendous amount of money for a fantastic cause. Thank you so much to everyone who attended and supported the event – we had some tired legs out there on the pitch at the end of the match but it was well worth it!”
