Student Council Talk Politics With The Lord Of Stockport

Our Student Council had the honour of meeting the first ever Lord of Stockport as part of a unique opportunity to broaden their understanding of the country’s political system.

Around 20 students spent around two hours with Lord Goddard, who introduced himself and explained the role the House of Lords plays in law-making.

After his presentation, Lord Goddard – formerly leader of Stockport Council – then fielded a question and answer session, offering his take on a wide range of topics including Brexit, the process of passing legislation and how he became a Lord.

Mrs Nicholls, who runs the Student Council, said: “This was a fantastic opportunity and we learned so much during the session with Lord Goddard. We can’t thank him enough for giving up his time to come and speak to us.”

Lord Goddard said: “This is an outstanding school and I can see it going from strength to strength. The students are one of the most respectful I have met and the questions just kept coming, which was great.”

Our Student Council has recently been shortlisted for the MEN Schools Award for School Team of the Year – they will find out if they have won at a ceremony at the Hilton Hotel in Manchester on 6th July.
