Seven year attendance achievement tops Stockport Academy Prizegiving highlights

The best of our students’ achievements were celebrated at Stockport Plaza last week at our annual Prizegiving ceremony.

Over 300 students received awards during the evening, which celebrated everything from attainment in individual subjects to students’ charity work and efforts to tackle bullying.

Sixth Form students Sam Nicholl and Amber Hobson received one of the loudest rounds of applause after they were recognised for having never missed a class during their seven years at Stockport Academy.

Amber said: “Sam and I have been going to school together since primary and we had 100% attendance there as well. We’ve had a few near-misses and it’s been hard, but I’m so proud of making it all the way to seven years as it’s a very long time!”

Sam added: “I’m sure it will make a difference in the long run and not missing a day has helped me to do the best I can with my work. I would say to anyone in school to make the effort as it certainly pays off.”

In addition to our students’ achievements, ICT Manager Mr Gaskell was called onto the stage to receive a commemorative watch in recognition of his 13 years of working at Stockport Academy – again, without missing a single day!

During the ceremony, we donated £5,000 to three of our supported charities – The Teenage Cancer Trust, Signpost Stockport Young Carers and Retrak – after students spent the last year holding dozens of events to raise money for good causes. Another £1,000 was donated to our sister school Central Academy in Carlisle to support families there after the winter flooding.

The event was attended by the Mayor of Stockport Councillor Chris Gordon and former head of Greater Manchester Police Sir Peter Fahy, while Stuart Taylor, Chief Executive of the Carers Trust, closed the night with a speech about the importance of making a positive contribution to the local community.

Stockport Academy Principal Mr McCarron said: “We’ve celebrated some fantastic achievements once again at this year’s Prizegiving ceremony and the dedication of Sam and Amber over their seven years with us is truly inspirational.

“This event is one of the highlights of our calendar and it is a superb reflection of the strong ethos and drive we see every day throughout the academy.”

Please note that photographs taken of students receiving their awards will be available online shortly.
