Year 8 Visit To Normandy Is A ‘Bon Voyage’

Our Year 8 students spent the best part of a week in Normandy to improve their French and History skills.

A group of 25 students made the trip to the north of France, setting off from the Academy on Tuesday evening by coach. They arrived in Dover at 5am the following morning before making the short trip across the Channel by ferry.

Their stamina was to be rewarded with a stop-off visit to Hornfleur for ice cream and they eventually arrived at the chateau that was to be their home for the next few days by late Wednesday afternoon. After a spot of swimming and a delicious evening meal, the group played ‘It’s A Knockout’ in the grounds before getting a well-deserved good night’s sleep!

The next morning was a busy one – with a trip to a local market followed by a visit to Omaha Beach (the site of the D-Day landings). This extended history lesson continued with students paying their respects at a US Second World War cemetery and a tour of Les Batteries Sur La Mer.

A final full day for the group saw them delving even deeper into the history books as they visited the Bayeux Tapestry. Later, they took part in a demonstration on how chocolate is made at a chocolate factory. Their final night was celebrated with a disco and an evening at the arcades.

Head of Modern Foreign Languages Ms Hindley said: “We had such a good time and I could not have asked for a better group of students to come on this visit to France. The staff at the chateau we stayed at told me their behaviour was the best they’ve seen, which is a superb compliment to receive.

“The visit was an excellent opportunity for our Year 8s to practise their French skills in real-life scenarios while also see their History studies come to life and I would like to thank all students who took part as they were a credit both to themselves and Stockport Academy.”
