Stockport Academy Pays Respects At Annual Poppy Drop

Stockport Academy’s annual Poppy Drop service to mark Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday took place on Friday 10th November.

The ceremony involved the whole school turning out in the atrium to pay their respects to the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while fighting for their country since the First World War.

Just before the clock struck 11am, former student Shaun Brady sounded the last post before everyone in the building observed an impeccable 2-minute silence. At the end of the silence, students in Year 10 and Year 11 – along with members of the community who had been invited to attend – dropped poppies from the first and second floor balconies.

Proceedings were brought to a close by Year 10 student Nicole Bowden and guest speaker Sir Peter Fahy. Nicole performed a beautiful rendition of the first verse of the national anthem ‘God Save The Queen’, while Sir Peter – former chief constable of Greater Manchester Police and Chief Executive of children’s charity Retrak – delivered a speech about the importance of reflection and remembrance.

Finally, Reverend Mike Newman offered a closing prayer.

Stockport Academy Principal Mrs McCann said: “The Poppy Drop has such a special place in the culture of the academy and it is so important to both students and staff that we pay our respects in this way.

“I would like to thank all of our guests for choosing to spend the morning with us and could not be more proud of our students for the level of respect and humility they displayed throughout the ceremony.”
