London Visit Gets Our Vote!

In January, our Student Council and Scholars Club spent the day in London visiting the Houses of Parliament. Student newsletter reporter Abi has written her account of the day...

On the 16th of January, Mr Taylor took a very excited bunch of Scholars Club members and Student Councillors to the Houses of Parliament. The day was overwhelmingly interesting, from learning how the Houses of Parliament first came into place, to voting for a Student Prime Minister!

When we first arrived at the Houses of Parliament, we had to go through an "airport check". This was to ensure nobody brings anything inappropriate into this special place. We were then collected by our two tour guides they were very nice and welcoming. First of all we started off by learning about the houses of parliament and why they are here, it was very interesting and we had lots of questions to ask our lovely tour guides. We then went on to the topic of the houses of lords and how the queen is not allowed in the houses of commons because her great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-uncle King Charles I misbehaved in there in 1642, therefore parliament holds a grudge.

During the tour, we fortunately got a first hand view into the world of Britain’s legal system and politics: we watched a discussion from a viewing area in the House of Lords/House of Commons. The day was a brilliant way to start a fresh new year off, and it helped us get an insight of what happens behind the doors of parliament! In my opinion this was one of the best opportunities so far, I have learnt a lot!

After visiting parliament we then went to have a look at Buckingham palace, it was amazing! Viktoria, a fellow member of the scholars club has said, "I am glad I was invited in this trip, I have learnt so much on this trip and was a phenomenal time.". Overall I'm sure everyone who attended this trip had a great time because I sure did! This was an exciting and interesting opportunity!
