Student Council Make Their Mark At Stockport Town Hall

Our Student Council spent an afternoon at Stockport Town Hall honing their skills and broadening their horizons with the Stockport Youth Partnership (SYP).

The SYP invited several schools across the borough to take part, with the aim of engaging them on a range of political issues and empowering them to be able to do their best in their roles as student councillors.

Students were able to take part in a debate session, where they were encouraged to make compelling arguments for or against questions such as ‘Will there ever be a nuclear war?’ and ‘Should people aged under 16 be allowed to vote?’. They also debated the importance of a ‘Curriculum for Life’ – something the UK Youth Parliament is currently focusing on.

Elsewhere, students were given basic First Aid training and there was also a workshop on the topic of hate crime, with our students working with those from other schools to discuss the issue and how they can work against it.

Mrs Nicholls, who leads the Student Council, said: “We had a great afternoon with the SYP and I think the training and experience our students gained can only help to make them even better student councillors.

“It was fantastic to see them getting involved – especially in the debate session where they were able to put some really compelling arguments across. Thank you very much to the SYP for inviting us to be involved once again.”
