Sixth Form students speak at House of Lords

A group of Stockport Academy Sixth Form students were invited to speak at the House of Lords after getting through to the semi-finals of a national competition.

Students Amy Lowe, Ashlea Pearson, Eve Fox and Natalie Howard were selected by judges at the Wings of Hope Achievement Awards – a social enterprise programme that celebrates young people demonstrating leadership, communication and creative skills to raise money for good causes.

The four girls hosted a music event in Edgeley to raise money for the Wings of Hope charity, which supports disadvantaged people overseas. Their success was recognised in the Stockport Express and they subsequently received a call to say they'd been shortlisted for the semi-final of the competition, inviting them to travel to London to showcase what they did in front of a panel of experts.

After travelling down in a taxi, they took part in a whistle-stop tour of the capital and enjoyed a meal together before they delivered a presentation at the House of Lords. They then returned to Stockport via taxi in what was an extremely long (but rewarding!) day for all involved!

Robert Grundy from the Wings of Hope said: “I was so impressed by them as a team – they explained their fundraising humbly yet clearly and it was clear that they have a real understanding of the importance of being social responsible young people.

“The judges were all really impressed by them and really enjoyed listening to them as a group – they were lovely to listen to!”

Head of Stockport Academy Sixth Form Ms Appleby said: “This another great example of the amazing achievements of our students and really demonstrates just how socially aware, innovative and ultimately generous they are – which of course are all fantastic qualities.

“Everyone at Stockport Academy is so proud of them and it’s quite something to be able to say you’ve spoken at the House of Lords. I’m so glad they were able to make the most of this wonderful opportunity.”
