Stockport Academy celebrates Carers Week

Our Young Carers were treated to a picnic in the sun at Lyme Park to mark National Carers Week.

The group of 24 enjoyed sandwiches and ice cream at the beauty spot before exploring the grounds.

Young Carers were the focus of assemblies and form tasks all week to raise awareness of some of the difficulties they might face. Last year, we were the only school in the country to be recognised with the Gold Young Carers in Schools Award.

One of the highlights of the visit was when two students conquered their fear of heights by taking on a fireman’s pole in the adventure playground – Safeguarding Officer and Young Carers Lead Mrs Fox went down it first and then after two hours of coaching they overcame their nerves.

Mrs Fox, Stockport Academy’s Safeguarding Officer and Young Carers Lead, said: “I could have cried with pride – both boys were so pleased with themselves and it topped off an absolutely perfect day.

“Supporting our Young Carers is so important at school and I’m delighted we were able to take them away for a proper treat.”
