Borough Care Homes Xmas Party - Lifelong Learning and Karoake

Stockport Academy raise the roof for our senior community Christmas party.

Last Friday, 5th December 2014, we hosted a visit from residents of Borough Care Homes, based in Stockport. In all, four of Borough Care Homes' residences were represented – Bruce Lodge, Meadway Court, Marbury House and Bryn Haven. The residents who attended were: Jean Jenkins; Morag Megson; Roy Crawford; Elsie Porter; Hazel Aspinas; Mavis Brown; Mary Nuttall; Ethel Moult; Vera Vaux; John Murphy; Percy Bramall; Les Mottershead; Amie Luvat; and Jean Greenwood.

Our Health and Social Care students, from across Key Stages 4 and 5 were hosts for the now annual Christmas Party, preparing the drama studio with decorations and the table-coverings. This was aided hugely by Ms Sorby, buying in some lovely new resources, and to Mr McCarthy for giving up his drama studio for the morning.

There were in total 15 elderly residents and 8 support staff. Our Health and Social Care students were engaged in conversation throughout the morning with our guests, who commented on the students’ politeness, interest, and confidence. Our students also acted as exemplary waiters/waitresses for morning tea/coffee and mince pies, and for the buffet lunch. Thanks here must also go to the kitchen staff for preparing such a lovely spread.

The bonus was more than that. The guests were entertained by Shaun Brady on his saxophone (3rd year on the trot, each year with even more skill), and 4 members of the choir from year 10 – Elisha Boycott; Becky Nightingale; Becci Bunting; and Emily Riley – all of whom blew away the visitors with their skill, talent, and as one resident pointed out, their “professionalism”. Simon Cowell, eat your heart out – Stockport Academy has got the talent! Residents of Borough Care Homes joined in with some of the singing, with a karaoke style singalong.

Another of our guests was keen to discuss with me what a hard time and bad name young people are generally given today – and yet here was evidence that given the opportunity, they can comfortably demonstrate their caring, considerate, outward-facing side, eager to make a positive contribution to their community.
