Teams from Alexandra Park, Cheadle Heath, Lark Hill, St Matthews and Meadowbank Primary Schools put their skills to the test over three rounds.
Round One focused on mental arithmetic questions of varying difficulties, while Round Two consisted of three separate challenges where teams had to decide their own strategy of how to take them on – either as a group, in pairs or individually. The challenges themselves were based around Maths Trails, Crossnumbers (similar to crosswords) and worded problems that involved pupils utilising their reasoning and problem-solving skills.
Finally, students participated in a shuttle task for Round Three, as they went against the clock to correctly answer a series of questions.
In the end, it was St Matthews who came out victorious and were rewarded with the trophy, which will be engraved with their name and remain on show in our reception ready for next year’s challengers.
Our Lead Numeracy Practitioner, Ms O’Brien, who organised the event, said: “It has been brilliant fun to welcome the Year 5s into school to compete in our Maths Tournament and they gave an absolutely fantastic account of themselves.
“Congratulations to St Matthews, and to all teams who participated – the standard of competition was exceptionally high and they all have an exciting future in Mathematics based on what we saw today!”
