Safeguarding

What is Safeguarding?

Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is defined as: protecting children from maltreatment; preventing impairment of children’s mental health or development; ensuring that children grow up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care; and acting to enable all children to have the best outcomes.

At Stockport Academy, safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is everyone’s responsibility. We are dedicated to ensuring that every decision we make is in the best interest of the child.

Child Protection

Stockport Academy has a duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of students. This responsibility necessitates a child protection policy and robust procedures. Where there are concerns about a child’s welfare the school will contact appropriate agencies, share information with them and work in partnership with them.

Concerns will be discussed with the family if it will not place the child at risk of significant harm. The child’s view will also be considered in deciding whether to inform the family in some circumstances, particularly where the child is sufficiently mature to make informed judgements. The interest of the child is paramount.

Protecting young people from extremism and radicalisation

The DfE has launched the Educate Against Hate website. The site brings together the best advice, support and resources available for parents, teachers and school leaders who want to learn how to protect young people from extremism and radicalisation, and is the result of successful collaboration between the Department for Education, the Home Office, the NSPCC, Internet Matters, Childnet, ParentZone, UK Internet Safety Centre, and the many other organisations who have contributed resources.
