House System

The House System At Stockport Academy

At Stockport Academy, our House System is a central part of daily school life and plays a powerful role in helping students feel a strong sense of belonging, pride and purpose. Designed to bring pupils together across year groups, our House System supports not only academic success, but also character development, teamwork and community spirit.

For families choosing a secondary school, our House System ensures that every child is known, valued and encouraged to get involved from their very first day with us.

A Strong Sense Of Belonging

Every student at Stockport Academy is placed into one of four Houses, named after some of the world’s most inspiring mountain peaks in Nepal:

  • Makalu
  • Lhotse
  • Sagarmatha
  • Annapurna

These aspirational names reflect the values we want our pupils to develop: resilience, ambition, teamwork and perseverance. Students remain in their House throughout their time at the Academy, building long‑lasting friendships across year groups and forming a strong identity within the school community.

Building Character Through Healthy Competition

Our House System creates a positive culture of healthy competition and collaboration. Students earn House Points throughout the year by:

  • Demonstrating excellent behaviour and attitudes to learning
  • Producing high‑quality classwork
  • Taking part in House competitions and enrichment activities
  • Contributing positively to school life and the wider community

House Points are celebrated regularly, helping pupils understand that effort, kindness and commitment matter just as much as academic results. This approach reinforces our core values of Aspiration, Respect and Community.

Events, Activities And Co-Curricular Opportunities

The House System brings learning to life beyond the classroom. Across the year, students take part in a wide range of activities, including:

  • Inter‑house competitions and challenges
  • Fun Day Fridays
  • Charity fundraising and community events
  • Creative, sporting and academic House challenges

What makes our House System unique is its integration across the curriculum. Subject areas contribute through themed competitions and enrichment activities — from maths challenges and science experiments to creative arts showcases and humanities quizzes. This allows students to shine in different ways while developing confidence, creativity and teamwork.

Developing Leadership And Responsibility

The House System offers meaningful leadership opportunities for pupils of all ages. Older students act as role models, while younger pupils are encouraged to contribute, take responsibility and get involved.

Students learn to:

  • Work collaboratively with peers of different ages
  • Represent their House with pride
  • Develop leadership, communication and organisational skills
  • Take ownership of their behaviour and choices

These experiences directly support our wider character education programme, helping pupils grow into confident, respectful and community‑minded young people.

Staff Support And Pastoral Care

Each House is led by a dedicated Head of House, supported by staff who know their students well and champion their success. Our Master of Ceremonies oversees the House programme, ensuring events are inclusive, motivating and enjoyable for all pupils.

For parents, this means:

  • Clear pastoral support structures
  • Strong relationships between staff and students
  • A school culture where every child feels noticed and supported

The House System helps staff and students connect beyond the classroom, strengthening relationships and reinforcing a positive, inclusive school ethos.

Why Parents Value Our House System

Parents consistently tell us that our House System helps their children:

  • Settle quickly into secondary school
  • Make friends across different year groups
  • Build confidence and self‑belief
  • Feel proud to be part of the Stockport Academy community

By combining reward, responsibility and enrichment, our House System ensures that every student has the opportunity to succeed — academically, socially and personally.

A Community Where Every Child Can Thrive

At Stockport Academy, our House System is more than just competition — it is about connection, character and opportunity. It helps create a school environment where students support one another, celebrate success together and grow into the very best versions of themselves.

Together, we are building a House culture that is fun, aspirational and empowering — where every child belongs and every achievement counts.

House Leaders

Master of Ceremonies

Greetings! I'm Mr. Allan, your friendly neighbourhood Master of Ceremonies at our fantastic school. As the ringmaster of our bustling house system, I'm the one responsible for keeping the carnival of competition alive and well. My days are filled with concocting mind-boggling challenges that'll test the mettle of our spirited students, donning my referee stripes to judge these daring contests, and ensuring that the great wheel of the house system spins fairly throughout the year. It's a role I've embraced with gusto, and I find immense joy in watching our young talents rise to the occasion.

One of the most fulfilling aspects of my role is witnessing the transformative impact of the house system on our students. From commentating the exhilarating sports day last year with its cheers, victories, falls, and triumphs to helping students excel in summer school, but my true pride lies in concocting a smorgasbord of challenges that students eagerly devour, each one more exhilarating than the last. So, as your trusty Master of Ceremonies, I promise you more thrilling adventures and hearty laughs ahead in the grand adventure of our school's house system!

Lhotse

Lhotse

A Massive hello and welcome to Lhotse!

I am Miss Land and I am super excited to be leading Lhotse to victory. Lhotse is one of the highest mountains in the world, a mountain that is challenging and pushes people to their limits. This is what i want from you - I want you to strive to be the best you can be!

We have a variety of specialities in Lhotse - we have singers, sports stars, writers, artists and many more. My aim for you as individuals is to be your best selves and develop your skills and aspirations alongside building great friendships and amazing memories. Ultimately we are all in this together, we cheer each other on, we build each other up, we motivate each other to get involved.

So here's to being your very best, doing your very best and lifting that trophy at the end of the year!

Sagarmatha

Sagarmatha

A huge hello to the wonderful Sagarmatha,

I am Mr Thornley and I couldn’t be happier to be leading the best house in the school. Sagarmatha is the Nepali name for Mount Everest, the tallest mountain above sea level in the world! Naturally, that means that we are going to push higher than everyone else, earn heaps of house points by being our best selves, and snatch that trophy at the end of the year!

We are lucky to have lots of different strengths and talents in Sagarmatha – we have artists, writers, sportspeople, performers, quick thinkers and great friends. One of our assets is our willingness to get involved and represent our team, but I think our main strength is our sense of community; even when we are not participating, we cheer on our housemates at the top of our lungs!

Annapurna

Annapurna - House Cup Champions 24/25

My name is Mr Joshi, and I am super excited to be the Head of House Annapurna. I joined Stockport Academy in 2022, and it has been amazing to experience the different talents and personalities the school has. It gives me great pride to be working with every staff and student in House Annapurna.

The Annapurna mountain is renowned as one of the most difficult climbs in the world.

One who is a part of House ‘Annapurna’ (which translates to everlasting food) must face the challenges that lie ahead in order to succeed. Together, we must be ambitious, dedicated people and work collectively as one.

So let’s be courageous and take up every opportunity we can whilst we are at Stockport Academy. Earn house points for us by being outstanding in your lessons, by being the best versions of yourselves in the school environment, and by getting involved with as much as you can. I look forward to working with all of you over the course of the year.

Makalu

Makalu

I am Ms Speers and I am very proud to be Head of Makalu House.

As a member of Makalu house I know that you will show the best version of yourself and therefore work hard towards developing talents, skills and a community spirit which no one can rival.

Makalu mountain stands apart from the rest due its unique features and we will stand apart from the rest due to our determination and team work.

Many exciting and challenging events have been planned throughout the school year. There will be an event for everyone to participate in or support, to earn house points and make great memories. I know that the house trophy should be ours, we just need to work together to make sure that Makalu makes history as the first house winner.
