What is LGBT+?
LGBT stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and the plus represents other gender and sexual identities. At Stockport Academy we believe everyone should be celebrated and inspired to reach their full potential. We do not tolerate any form of homophobic, transphobic or biphobic bullying and aim to educate all students on diversity.
How do we celebrate LGBT+ students?
Every Tuesday there is an LGBT+ club in L07 where everyone is welcome. This is a safe space where you can be yourself. At LGBT+ club we do different activities and crafts such as keyring making, parties, making picture frames and listening to music. We also have meetings where we plan ideas to make the school a more inclusive space for everyone. At LGBT+ club you can be called by your preferred name and pronoun, this will be confidential and club members will not use this information outside of club without your permission.
Where can you get support within school?
If you feel like you require any support in school or want to have a conversation around your gender identity or sexuality, you can speak to the LGBT ambassadors, teachers or pastoral staff. Teachers who wear rainbow lanyards have had training on how to offer support to you. If you experience any form of bullying, then you should report this immediately and it will be taken seriously and investigated by staff members.
Where can you go if you would like support outside of school?
If you would like to access support outside of school you can visit The Proud Trust website. They provide support to young people in the Stockport Area and run a youth group each Wednesday for LGBT+ students. You can find out more information on their website, our LGBT noticeboard or ask Miss Burrowes for the information.
