Stockport Academy recognised nationally with School of Character Quality Mark Plus

Our school has been recognised nationally for its outstanding commitment to character education, achieving the prestigious School of Character Quality Mark Plus from the Association for Character Education.

This highly regarded award is given to a select number of schools across the country, placing Stockport Academy among a small group to reach this standard. It recognises a sustained, whole-school approach to developing character alongside academic success.

The report highlights the “significant dedication and commitment” shown by staff, students and governors in embedding character education across all areas of school life. Staff were praised for their strong sense of ownership, with character described as central to teaching, learning and pastoral support. Inspectors noted that colleagues see themselves as both subject specialists and “practitioners of character”, helping students develop the values and habits needed for future success.

A number of key strengths were recognised. The academy’s House System was highlighted for building a strong sense of belonging and positive relationships across year groups. This contributes to a culture where students feel valued and motivated to attend and succeed.

Inspectors also praised the school’s 'clear and consistent' approach to character across the curriculum. The Future Me programme was described as high quality and carefully designed, supporting students to build important life skills alongside their academic learning.

Students themselves were recognised for their strong understanding of character, with many able to reflect on their strengths and identify how they can continue to develop. The report highlights that this is the result of a deeply embedded culture where values are understood, celebrated and applied in everyday life.

The report also recognised the wide range of opportunities beyond the classroom, with participation in co-curricular activities becoming a strong feature of school life and supporting students to develop key character traits.

Assistant Principal Ms Stirling said: “We are incredibly proud to receive the School of Character Quality Mark Plus. This recognition reflects the collective effort of our whole school community. Our mission is centred on creating opportunity to succeed, and character education is at the heart of that. We want every student to leave us with not only strong qualifications, but also the confidence, resilience and values they need to thrive.”

This national recognition reinforces Stockport Academy’s commitment to developing well-rounded young people, ensuring all students are prepared for success in school and beyond.
