Sun shines on Stockport Academy Sports Day

You can never rely on British weather, which is why everyone at Stockport Academy breathed a sigh of relief at the sight of blue skies for today’s (July 16th) Sports Day.

Originally planned for Tuesday before being moved to Thursday because of the weather forecast, the sun shone upon a wide range of activities that involved the whole school.

While some students were able to take part in enrichment activities such as zorbing and inflatable sumo wrestling, the morning also involved each year competing in events such as shot putt, javelin, long jump and triple jump, before everyone gathered onto the field in the afternoon for the track activities.

Of course, the highlight for many students was the staff race at the end of the day, which saw teachers take part in a relay race that involved an egg and spoon race, wheelbarrow race and a traditional sprint to the finish line.

However, the fun didn’t end there – with many students staying in school during Period 6 to help raise over £200 for the Teenage Cancer Trust. The hour saw Mr and Mrs McGahey compete against Mr and Mrs Campbell in a couples’ quiz, before Mr Asher and two students had their legs waxed. Finally, Mrs Nicholls was chosen to be ‘gunged’ in a horrible concoction of custard, gravy, mushy peas and who knows what else!

Well done to everyone who participated in today’s activities and contributing to a truly memorable day.
