Transition Trees help Year 6s put down roots at Stockport Academy

Our recent transition activities took a meaningful step forward as new Year 7 students - currently in Year 6 - were welcomed into school to take part in a special Transition Trees planting event.

The visit formed part of our extensive transition programme, designed to support Year 6 pupils as they prepare for the move to secondary school, helping them feel confident, excited and familiar with their new environment.

In total, nine local primary schools were represented, with up to six pupils from each school taking part. Together, pupils from Cheadle Heath, Alexandra Park, St Matthew’s, Cale Green, Adswood, Ladybridge, Meadowbank, Lark Hill and Bridge Hall Primary Schools worked alongside our students to plant a sapling Hazel, Dog Rose or Hawthorn tree.

Each group carefully dug a planting spot beside the school’s Peace Garden, creating a place for their tree to grow and thrive over the coming years. The symbolism of the activity was clear, reflecting the journey pupils themselves will take as they grow and develop during their next five years at our school.

Throughout the session, Year 6 pupils enjoyed chatting with our student leaders, asking questions about school life while working together outside and making the most of the sunshine. The relaxed, hands-on activity helped build new connections and gave pupils a chance to feel part of the school community well before starting Year 7.

Once each tree was planted, pupils completed the final part of the experience by setting down a bespoke commemorative plaque for their primary school. To mark the occasion, groups then posed for photographs alongside their tree and plaque and were presented with a certificate to take home as a keepsake of the day.

Ms Foster, Head of Transition, said: “Planting the Transition Trees is a powerful way for pupils to leave their mark before they even start with us. Just like their trees, these pupils will put down roots here and flourish over the next five years, supported every step of the way as part of our school community.”

Events like this form a key part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring pupils experience a positive, supportive and memorable transition into secondary education.
