Stockport Academy students gain two of just 22 places in national initiative.
Stockport Academy’s Matthew Massey and Declan McGann are amongst the elite after securing places on the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust’s ‘Unlocking Potential’ programme.
Matthew (from Cheadle Hulme) and Declan (from Ashton-under-Lyne), both in Year 11, beat off tough competition for an opportunity to take part in the national scheme, with just 22 places available.
Run in partnership with examining body AQA, the ‘Unlocking Potential’ programme is a six month mentoring programme for young people who have shown resilience in the face of adversity. Together with their mentors, young people work on a community project, allowing them to:
- Develop their skills and knowledge
- Increase their confidence, self-belief and motivation
- Raise their aspirations and encourage them to aim high in life
On Thursday 6th March, Matthew and Declan took part in the 2014 programme launch in London, where they were both allocated a mentor from the sporting world, who will provide support and guidance as they develop and deliver their respective projects.
Commented Declan: “Thursday was a really inspiring day, looking forward to the next six months.”
Added Stockport Academy Principal Frank McCarron: “To have two of the 20 young people from this initiative is an incredible achievement and we will be watching with enthusiasm and interest as to how Matthew and Declan’s projects help make a difference to the local community.”
