Students in Years 7 and 8 participated in Stockport Academy's first ever LIFE (Literacy Is For Everyone) Day - emphasising the importance of Literacy as a tool to access the whole of the curriculum.
Academy staff teaching Y7 and 8 during periods 1 and 2 were asked to plan a lesson in their subject area that had a definite literacy bias and the results were amazing!
Lessons ranged from writing an account detailing a parachute jump over Paradise Island to writing a post mortem report about the death of Thomas Becket and code cracking. The MFL department used the Simpsons to reinforce and consolidate language to describe family members and in History pupils were asked to discuss and compare diseases in the Industrial Revolution.
Pupils were asked to review the lessons they had just experienced and in doing so reinforced that the LIFE Day was a huge success. When asked to explain what they enjoyed about the lesson, comments ranged from “Everything!” to “I enjoyed writing a report about cholera” and “I enjoyed writing a funny story about the Good Samaritan.”
It will be a challenge to beat the success of the first LIFE Day but the Academy staff are confident they can do it again next year!
