Stockport Academy students sample Spanish culture in Barcelona

A group of our MFL students got to try out their Spanish language skills first-hand during a recent visit to Barcelona.

After landing at Barcelona airport at midday, the students – who are in Years 9 to 11 – had the opportunity to speak the local lingo almost immediately as they ordered food in Spanish.

There were plenty of activities planned throughout the visit, starting with a trip to Park Guell for a look at some amazing coastline views. In the afternoon, the students visited the legendary Nou Camp football stadium – home to stars like Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez – where they had a tour. One of the highlights here was taking a look around the team changing rooms – the group was very impressed that it had its own jacuzzi!

The next day involved a visit to La Sagrada Familia, an unfinished cathedral in the centre of Barcelona that looks like it is melting in the sun. Students practised more of their Spanish on the locals before they went on a boat trip at the harbour and then went out for tea.

On the final day students went on a shopping spree down La Rambla mall. After that, they ate ice cream at Plaza de Catalunya – the perfect way to say goodbye before jetting back to rainy Stockport!

MFL Teacher Ms Hindley, who organised the trip, said: “The best way to learn language is to live it, and the trip to Barcelona was a perfect chance for students to sample the culture they study in the classroom.”
