‘Diadem’, ‘panache’, ‘anthropomorphic’ – these are just some of the examples of words some of our Key Stage 3 students had to spell this afternoon as part of the Academy’s annual Spelling Bee contest.
The popular event saw an enthusiastic audience pack out the main hall, raising an incredible £150 for Macmillan along the way.
After a mind-boggling contest, two winners were crowned; Rachel Su (Year 7) clinched the Honeybee title, while Hakeem Khaliq (Year 9) won the Hornet category.
Hakeem – who tasted victory after correctly spelling ‘aerodynamic’ – is no stranger to Spelling Bee success, after competing in, and winning, last year’s Hornet group.
The pair have each won a Kindle for their spelling skills, while runners up Mia Hackney and Megan Deans will both be presented with book vouchers.
Miss Sumner organised the competition and said it was a runaway success.
“This is an inclusive contest to encourage students to engage in literacy and develop a love of English,” she commented.
“The standard this year was really high, and hopefully we’ve gone some way to making spelling cool!”
