Car rescue demo among Stockport Academy SMSC highlights

A demonstration where a student was cut out of a staged car crash by firefighters was one of the most talked-about features of yet-another action-packed SMSC Day at Stockport Academy.

Members of Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) used the ‘jaws of life’ to cut away at the scrapped vehicle to release Sixth Form student Paddy, who had volunteered to play the role of a road traffic accident victim.

GMFRS also brought along some drink driving simulators, highlighting the effects that alcohol can have on your ability to drive safely.

Elsewhere, workshops were delivered by numerous agencies and charities, including The Teenage Cancer Trust, The Sophie Lancaster Foundation, Stockport Drug and Alcohol Team, Barclays Life Skills, Mode Rehabilitation, Stockport Without Abuse and Mosaic.

Students also participated in team-building exercises led by SkillForce, while Year 8s got involved in a Healthy Living Day run by the PE Department.

Safeguarding & Child Protection Officer Mrs Fox, who organised the day, said: “I have been hearing comments such as ‘best SMSC day yet’, ‘students are delightful’, ‘students are a credit to you’ and ‘I can tell you do a lot of work here regarding tolerance/anti homophobia’ all day.

“Yet again, SMSC Day was a huge success and plans are already in place to make the next one in November even bigger and better!”
